Commissioning a mural is simpler than you might think. This page covers how the process works, what it costs, and what to expect at every stage. By the time you get in touch, you'll already have the answers.

Before you enquire

What we'll need from you

To give you a rough estimate, we need three things:

  • A photo of the wall or space
  • The dimensions (width × height in metres)
  • The location

Design inspiration is helpful early — Pinterest boards, colour references, examples of work you like — but if you're not there yet, we can guide that conversation. The more you bring to the first contact, the faster we can get you an accurate number.

Step by step

The Process

1

Enquire

Get in touch with a photo of your wall, dimensions, and location. Share any inspiration you have. Even rough ideas help.

2

Rough estimate

Based on your enquiry we'll come back with a rough estimate within 2–3 business days.

3

Site visit

If the rough estimate works for you, we'll arrange a site visit to confirm dimensions, surface condition, and access requirements.

4

Formal quote & agreement

You'll receive a detailed quote based on the site visit. A signed agreement and 50% deposit locks in your place in the schedule.

5

Design

We develop a scaled concept and digital mockup for your approval. Two rounds of revisions included. Nothing goes on the wall until you've signed off.

6

Paint & complete

We arrive on site and handle everything. Final 50% on completion, high-resolution photos of the finished work delivered.

Process & Timeline

Most medium sized projects take 4-8 days on site, depending on size and complexity. Allow 2–4 weeks from signed agreement to start date for the design phase. Full timelines are provided as part of your project quote and scope.

Popular periods book out quickly. 6–8 weeks lead time is ideal, though we can sometimes move faster for smaller projects. Get in touch early to secure your slot.

For outdoor murals, we build weather contingency into the schedule. We'll keep you updated and reschedule to the nearest available slot if needed.

Design

That's completely normal. Our process is designed to draw out what you're looking for — we ask the right questions and do the design thinking.

Two rounds of revisions are included in every project. Additional revisions are available at an hourly rate.

Yes, always. You'll receive a scaled digital mockup showing exactly how the mural will look in your space. Nothing goes on the wall until you've approved it.

Yes — if you have an existing design or artwork you'd like painted, we can work with that. Get in touch to discuss scope and pricing.

Investment

Murals vary enormously in size, complexity, surface type, and access requirements. Quoting individually means you pay for what your project actually needs — not a one-size-fits-all rate.

Practical

We'll confirm surface requirements after the site visit. Most standard interior walls are fine as-is.

No — once the design is approved and the wall is accessible, we handle everything. We'll check in with progress photos along the way.

Interior murals painted with quality paint (we use Resene Lumbersider exclusively) last decades with normal care. Exterior murals may need touch-ups over time depending on UV and weather exposure.

Yes — murals are painted with regular wall paint and can be painted over. If potential future removal is a concern, let us know upfront so we can discuss options.

Working with Off The Wall

Yes — we're based in North Canterbury but paint across New Zealand. Travel costs are included in quotes for out-of-region projects.

Projects are always led by Mel. For larger-scale work, we bring in experienced muralists to assist — this is reflected in the quote and timeline.

Minor changes can sometimes be accommodated — contact us immediately if something comes up. Significant changes may affect the timeline and cost.
